Why doesn't the summer last all year?

That would be marvelous, but you'd have to live on the equator!

There the sun gives heat all year round, for it is nearly always directly above the equator. Living here, we have four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Why is that?

The Earth turns on an imaginary spindle, tilted over in relation to the sun. It takes twenty-four hours for the Earth to rotate once on its axis, and one year for it to circle the sun. The sun shines on the Earth's surface, in different ways. On 21 June, the Earth's position is such that the northern hemisphere is closer to the sun than the southern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere it is the beginning of summer, whilst in the southern hemisphere, it is the beginning of winter. On 21 March, whilst it is the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere, it is the beginning of autumn in the southern hemisphere. Six months later on 21 September, it is the opposite. This happens every year.

Unhappily, summer doesn't last all year in our country. This happens only on the equator.
