ARLINGTON, Va. - Judging strictly by Facebook personal updates, it looks as if wait times for teeing off at the voting booth vary today around the country. Northern Virginia Facebookers report waiting anywhere from as little as five minutes to as long as two hours for early risers in a region turning red-to-purple, which will likely be responsible if Obama wins the Commonwealth.
The county is home to the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, the Air Force Memorial and Fort Myer. John McCain planted his national campaign headquarters here, as did President Bush in 2004 and Hillary Clinton in 2007, but the Arizona senator is unlikely to win in Arlington. It is a predominantly Democratic enclave, made up of mostly lower to middle-class single family homes.
At a polling place in Arlington County just outside Washington, The Mouth saw a Republican voter this morning barking at an Obama volunteer handing out sample Democratic ballots and threatening to have him arrested. The irate voter was at the end of a long line of about 500 Virginians around 6:15 a.m. in south Arlington and insistent that the Democrats were breaking state law by campaigning too close to the voting booths.
Pointing to the stunned volunteer’s Obama tee, he bellowed: “Get that shirt off!”
The complainer (a neighbor of The Mouth) also complained that Team Obama had set up a table close to the line. He called the Arlington County Police to complain from his cell phone, demanding the Democrats be arrested.
That was when one of the Obama volunteers recognized him and greeted him by name. It seemed the woman he wanted arrested lived four doors down from his house.
